Sustainability
Sep 22nd 2008
The basic premise that we are working to with all of this is one of sustainability. Often environmentalists could be perceived as only interested in preserving the earth for it’s ability to look after human beings, that essentially we value nature and the planet’s ecosystems only because they support us, and it is this self interest that drives us to prevent the destruction of our planet. We should of course go beyond the selfish preservation of our own species if we truly value the planet. There is no part in isolation, it is an interconnected and interdependent thing our earth, and all of it needs to maintain a certain balance for it’s smooth operation. The stewardship of this planet however is basically down to us as the main influencing factor in the rapid changing of ecosystems and our attitude towards the earth needs to be one of sustainability. Whether we view this as a requirement for the sustainability of the resources we presently consume (they are finite remember) of whether we view it in a much more radical green way, the fact is that as a whole, we don’t live sustainably, even those of us who try to do not. The rubbish and nuclear waste is still buried, the industrial pollutants that produce our products still wash into the sea (and if you think they don’t in your country, where do you actually get those cheap products from?) exporting pollution means out of site out of mind, but this is one planet, we need to make it ALL OF IT a sustainable one.
